Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
BJJ Beginner's Guide | Broome County Martial Arts
“Jiu-Jitsu is the gentle art. It’s the art where a small man is going to prove to you, no matter how strong you are, no matter how mad you get, that you’re going to have to accept defeat. Thats what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is.”
-Saulo Ribeiro
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling, specifically ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant.
BJJ grew rapidly in popularity for it's effectiveness in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition, however, it is also regarded for its effectiveness on the street as well, having been adopted into training programs for military and law enforcement. In addition to learning effective self defense techniques, BJJ is great for developing strength, flexibility, losing weight, and getting fit!
Our program is lead by world renowned UFC© veteran and Professional Mixed Martial Artist Tamdan "The Barn Cat" McCrory.
